How a Tankless Water Heater Works

A tankless water heater.

When you open the hot water tap, the tankless water heater will detect how much flow you want. The flow sensor then activates to determine the amount of hot water you need. The igniter starts, and the gas control valve opens. The fan and venturi turn on to regulate the output of gas, and the premix burner ignites to provide a flame to heat the water.

Next, the tankless water heater preheats the cold water in the secondary heat exchanger. The pre-heated water flows from the secondary to the primary heat exchanger. The tankless water heater determines the outgoing temperature and adjusts the flame to heat the water. Heated water flows to the buffer tank and out through your faucet.

Often, yes, though it depends on venting, gas or electrical supply, and drainage at the new location. Moving from a garage to an exterior wall is a common request when switching to tankless. We will walk the space with you and tell you what is involved before you commit.

Yes — annual descaling to clear mineral buildup from the heat exchanger, plus a check of the venting, filters and burner. Skipping it is the single most common reason a tankless unit underperforms or fails early in this area.

A tankless unit heats water as it flows through, on demand, instead of keeping a tank hot around the clock. That means no standby heat loss, no capacity to run out mid-shower, and a much smaller footprint on the wall.

Tankless units typically outlast tank models, often by a considerable margin, provided they are descaled on schedule. Given how hard our water is, regular flushing is not optional if you want that lifespan.

If your unit is past 10 years and showing rust-colored water, moisture around the base, or repeated faults, planned replacement is almost always cheaper than an emergency one — a tank that fails outright can put 40 or more gallons onto your floor.

It will not run out the way a tank does, but it does have a flow rate limit. Run two showers and a dishwasher at once and a small unit will struggle. Sizing the unit to how your household actually uses hot water is the whole game.

It helps. Scale buildup is what shortens the life of water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines here, and it is the main reason tankless units need regular descaling. Reducing hardness at the source slows all of that down.

Benefits of a Tankless Water Heater Installation

Most homes still have storage tank water heaters. Although they have a cheaper upfront cost, they’re highly inefficient when compared to tankless water heaters. They also don’t provide your home with an endless supply of hot water. If your home has a high demand for hot water, you’re better off with a tankless water heater. Here are the benefits of installing a tankless water in your home:

  • Highly efficient at supplying hot water instantly.
  • Energy Star certified.
  • Longer lifespan than storage tank water heaters.
  • Use 80 percent less space.
  • Easy-to-use control panel and clean appearance.
  • Improve the resale value of your home.
